AP residents plan to protest sale of Conn Brown Harbor

ARANSAS PASS - Maxine Bowen is asking the silent majority to speak up and has set aside a Saturday event to hear their voices on the city's impending sale of Conn Brown Harbor.

She's calling it Hands Around the Harbor and it's taking the shape of a family picnic.
"I thought I could either be the silent majority or start talking to people and telling them how I feel," said the Aransas Pass native. "One night it just came to me - hands around the harbor. I could get my family and friends together and make a human chain around the harbor to protect our harbor and our memorial."
Bowen, who now lives in Cuero, is one of many people concerned about Aransas Pass' plan to sell land around the harbor to developers with a $250 million plan for a marina, restaurants and condos. The land is home to the Seamen's Memorial Tower, and many residents want to be sure it stays in place no matter what development comes to the harbor.
Bowen's father's name is on the tower. Ed Cole died of a heart attack while at sea in 1969, a year before the tower was dedicated to all those who lost lives on the water. "Yes, develop it. Yes, fix it up, but don't give it away," she said.
Bowen's sister, Amanda May, a Rockport resident, has been passing out flyers all over Aransas Pass. She wants to be sure the harbor, tower and park remain open to everyone.
"That has always been our sanctuary place," she said.
In addition to the food and fun, Bowen said there will be a chance to sign petitions seeking to oust Mayor Jesus Galvan and Mayor Pro Tem Dorothy Roberts for their lead role in decisions to sell the harbor. Another petition requiring any sale of city land to go before the voters is also circulating.
Aransas Pass Citizens for Smart Growth, a group in favor of the harbor development plan, is not planning to attend Saturday's event.
"We don't want to be disruptive," said Marilyn Rimer.
The group is planning its own educational campaign.
